"Metaphor of the Fall of Dynasties"
In China, the fall of a dynasty is often due to the negligence of the ruling power.
They fail to govern the country properly and do not take precautions against internal and external troubles,
ultimately leading to their downfall.
Similarly, our own downfall is caused by negligence.
When our eyes see images,
our ears hear sounds,
our noses smell scents,
our tongues taste flavors,
our bodies feel sensations,
and our hearts perceive emotions and thoughts,
we develop likes and dislikes, greed and hatred.
Without the arising of mindfulness to recognize these defilements,
we become attached to everything in the world.
When we encounter unfavorable people or situations,
lose what is beautiful,
or fail to obtain what we desire,
we are struck by sorrow, sadness, disappointment, and anger,
inviting our own downfall.
