Introducing a cute monk who can communicate with dino spirits, Luang Pu Dinosaur (Ha) of Wat Sakawan
Since this is the first post of 2021, thought I'd start with something light in contrast to the rather contemplative post of yesterday. Luang Pu Ha, or better known as Luang Pu Dino, was born on Friday, 2nd of July 1925. This makes him 95 years old as of today.
Luang Pu Ha was an ordinary monk until he fell severely ill while studying for his Dhamma exams. He ended up in a monk's hospital for 3 months without any sign of recovery. Because his disease was so severe, he went to Wat Phra Si Ratanasadaram and made a determination, "If I have fate to stay ordained, then may the disease disappear. If I don't have the merit to stay alive, may I die in the yellow robe." He said, "I felt that if I could live as a monk for a long time, I would be able to contribute to the Buddha Sasana and help the people of the world."
After that, he returned to his home village in a bid to fulfil his vow. He also made another determination to live in the forest and practice mental seclusion and calmness. Due to the virtue of his devotion to Buddhism, with the power of his spiritual practice together with the help of a local healer, the disease symptoms slowly subsided and he was miraculously cured.
In 1991, he saw a very bright light (nimitta) in his meditation, which slowly transformed into a vision of large creatures with long necks (maybe Phuwiangosaurus) eating leaves and wading around in the water. He also perceived this vision two more times, in 1993 and in 1994. In the last vision, the dinosaur spirits told LP Ha that they would like to stay with him, and there would be a heavy rainfall the next day. Indeed that came true, and the rain was so heavy that it washed away the soil revealing dinosaur bones beneath. This was how Wat Sakawan, Kalasin Province was transformed into a dinosaur museum. The museum was named Sirindhorn Museum, after Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who presided over its opening ceremony.

“Relics” A Dharma Teaching Given By Luang Pu Ha Subharo to the Bhikkhu Sangha
เรื่องเกศาองค์หลวงปู่ ปกติเมื่อมีการปลงออกมาจะม้วนกันเป็นก้อนกลม บางก้อนจะปรากฏเป็นผลึกแก้วใสปนอยู่ข้างใน บางก้อนเส้นเกศาจะใสและสะท้อนแสง ส่วนตัวของผู้เขียน เคยได้รับเล็บเท้าท่านมาใส่ผอบไว้บูชา ปรากฏว่า เศษเล็บขององค์ท่านค่อยๆเปลี่ยนจากเล็บเป็นการรวมกันเป็นก้อนกลมๆ และบางชิ้นก็จับกันเป็นแพ มีผลึกแก้วใสๆปนรวมอยู่ เล็บบางชิ้นก็เริ่มใสขึ้นเรื่อยๆ อีกอีกอย่างที่แปลกคือ เมื่อสมัยท่านเข้ารักษาอาการอาพาธที่กรุงเทพ ได้ขอเจาะเลือดท่านไว้ตรวจ เมื่อตรวจเสร็จส่วนที่เหลือคุณขวัญเรือน อุปฐากท่านขอหมอเก็บรักษาไว้ เป็นเวลากว่า ๒ ปี ปรากฏว่าเลือดนั้นไม่เน่าไม่เสีย ไม่จับเป็นก้อน กลับยังเป็นน้ำเลือดที่ยังไหลและเป็นสีเลือดอยู่ เหตุนี้จึงมีคนมาขอเกศา ขอเล็บท่านบ่อยๆ วันนี้ก็เช่นกัน มีครูบาท่านหนึ่งมากราบองค์หลวงปู่พร้อมผอบใบใหญ่
Whenever Luang Pu Ha Subharo shaved his head, his disciples would often roll the stands of hair into circular shapes. Miraculously, after a period of time, these small, spherical shaped pieces of hair would transform to become transparent and reflective. Amongst these, some of the balls of hair would gradually crystallise. I myself, (the author) had previously obtained some of the scraps of toe nails that Luang Pu had snipped off. I placed them into a stupa and made offerings to it. After some time, some of these scraps of toe nails started to form spherical shares, while others combined into a linear form. Within these scraps, observations of crystallised objects could be seen. Even more miraculous was when Luang Pu went for a blood test in a hospital in Bangkok when he fell sick. After the test, Luang Pu’s kapiya (close student / assistant) instructed the doctor to preserve the remaining left over blood. Even after two years, the blood remained as perfect as it was before, uncontaminated and free from impurities. As such, many individuals often came to request Luang Pu for his shaved hair or toe nails that had been snipped off. In this story, a monk brought a large relic container when he paid his respects to Luang Pu, intending to request for some of these relics.

หลวงปู่ :เหอะ เหอะ ตัวท่านไม่ใช่สังฆาเหรอ จึงต้องไปเที่ยวพึ่งสังฆาอื่น เอาเส้นผมไปบูชา เอาของทิ้งไปบูชา อย่าเอาของนอกแถวนอกแนวคำสอนพระบรมครูนะ พระองค์ให้พึ่งตนเอง ให้ทำเอง
Luang Pu: Aren’t you a Sangha yourself? Why do you need to go around searching for the Sangha ? Why are you venerating my hair ? Why are you venerating things that others throw away ? Do not steer off from the path that has been illuminated and taught by the Buddha. Do not be preoccupied with things that the Buddha himself never taught. The Buddha taught us to seek refuge within ourselves, to rely on ourselves.
คุณก็มีมือมีเท้า ทำไมไม่ทำเอง เขาว่าเส้นผมของผมเป็นพระธาตุ ผมก็ไม่เคยไปขอดูกับคนที่เขาเก็บไว้ มีแต่คนเขาว่า ถ้ามันเป็นพระธาตุจริง ไม่ก็ไม่แปลกดอกคุณเอ้ย ผมก็คน คุณก็คน ถ้าคุณอยากได้คุณก็ต้องทำเอง ดีกว่าไปขอคนอื่นเขา เที่ยวขอคนนั้นคนนี้ องค์นั้นองค์นี้ ขอมาไว้ทำไม ขอมาสะสมเอากิเลส มัวแต่ไปหลงพระธาตุจนลืมพระธรรม
You have hands and legs, why don’t you achieve it yourself ? Why are you relying on others ? Many say that my hair transforms into relics. I have never asked them to bring these relics to me to let me take a look. I have only heard of such chatter. Even if my hair really transformed into relics, there’s nothing extraordinary about it. I am a human, so are you. If you wish to obtain it, you must practice yourself. That is far greater, and superior than begging for these relics from others. Why are you begging for it ? Begging for these things merely enhances the potency of your Three Poisons, Greed, Anger and Ignorance. By being obsessed with these relics, in the end you will lose touch and forget the Buddha’s teachings!
พระธาตุยังศรัทธาให้เกิดได้เท่านี้ แต่พระธรรมนั้นยังปัญญาให้เกิด เป็นประโยชน์โสตถิผลต่อเราทั้งในชาตินี้และชาติหน้า พระธาตุที่คุณสะสมไว้ เอาออกมาดูดีใจภูมิใจว่าเป็นของคนนั้นคนนี้ องค์นั้นองค์นี้ แต่แล้วก็พอกพูนกิเลสตนเอาไว้ ตามจิตตัวเองไม่ทัน สำคัญว่า เส้นผม เล็บเท้า เล็บมือ เป็นของศักดิ์สิทธิ์ สำคัญว่ากระดูกเป็นของศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ก็พยายามเก็บสะสมให้มากๆ เอาไปเอามา น้ำเยี่ยว น้ำหมากก็พลอยกลายเป็นพระธาตุไปด้วย ของคุณไม่มีหรืออย่างไร กระดูกหน่ะ เส้นผมหน่ะ เล็บหน่ะ แบกสังขารไม่หนักบ้างเหรอกระดูกตัวเองก็ไม่พอเหรอ
Relics can engender faith in others. However, Dharma can inspire wisdom in us, and bring us happiness and benefits in this life, as well as the many lives to come. The relics you have kept, when you take them out to take a look, you will be elated, and overwhelmed by pride. This is whose relic, that is whose’s relic… Unknowingly, the Three Poisons are growing as you do so. By perceiving hair, fingernails, toe nails, bones as sacred objects and collecting as many of them as possible. In the end, even urine and the remains of Areca Palm also turn into Relics. Don’t you have yourself ? Bones, hair, fingernails, toenails… Don’t you think that it’s heavy enough to be carrying one’s own 5 khandha (1. Form · 2. Feeling · 3. Perception · 4. Mental formations · 5. Consciousness.), why do you need to carry the khandha of others?
หลวงปู่นั้นพอแล้วแบกมานานแล้วหนักแล้วเหนื่อยแล้ว คุณเอ้ย กระดูกเราก็หนักพออยู่แล้ว อย่าไปเที่ยวเอากระดูกใครมาแบกนะ มันหนักเพิ่ม ภาราทานัง ทุกขัง โลเก การแบกถือของหนักเป็นความทุกข์ในโลกเด้อ ให้พากันจำไว้ ให้เอาเวลาไปทำความพากความเพียร เอาเวลาไปภาวนา ดีกว่ามาเที่ยวหาเส้นผม เศษเล็บ เศษกระดูกคนอื่นไปบูชา อยากได้ก็ให้พากันทำเอานะ อย่าไปอาศัยแรง อาศัยกำลังคนอื่นทำเข้าใจนะ
Luang Pu myself has already carried these 5 khandha for so long, and it has been extremely exhausting. Monk ! Our bones are already heavy enough, do not seek the bones of others to carry! All these weights are merely the encapsulations of Samsaric Suffering! Please remember my words of advice and utilise your time well and exert yourself diligently in practice ! That is much more superior than seeking the hair, bones, fingernails and toe nails of others to venerate, pay respects and make prostrations to. If you wish to accomplish these ( your own relics ), then you must make an effort yourself, rather than rely on others. Do you understand ?

LP Ha told a female devotee 3 months ago that, when she offered the land to the temple , people in the temple would not like her. They would do bad deeds on her.
Luang pu said , ''But please be patient and keep calm, you will receive the (past) bad karma that you have done by yourself'
3 months later, that devotee got attacked by others. Luckily , she could tide over the difficulty with her own practise

(Although the action of offering land is a merit , people are jealous of her. This gives an opportunity for her past bad karma to ripe. When it ripes, ppl attack her )
儘管不像其他高僧那樣廣為人知,但我很喜歡這位高僧提到龍王(พญานาค)時的言論。
有一次,一位信徒向Luang Pu Ha Supharo或Luang Pu Dinosaur(恐龍聖僧,因為曾發現恐龍化石)諮詢關於龍王的話題。以下是他們的對話:
信徒:隆普,在Phu Kum Khao山頂上寫著「龍王之穴」。我很好奇,龍王真的存在嗎?最近關於龍王的傳聞也挺多的,所以我想來向龍王祈福求財。
隆普:當然有啊,龍王是真實存在的。
信徒:隆普,您是怎麼知道龍王真的存在的呢?
隆普:(舉起一瓶優格飲品)這裡面有什麼?
信徒:乳酸菌。
隆普:那「乳酸菌」是什麼?
信徒:是一種微生物啊,用顯微鏡才能看到,肉眼看不見的。
隆普:對啊,看這些東西需要用特殊設備。同樣,想看到龍王也需要「設備」。龍王是屬於天界的生物,要用「天眼」才能看見;沒有天眼,就看不到天界的存在;沒有天耳,就聽不到天界的聲音;沒有天身,就去不了天界。我們看不到,不代表它不存在。
信徒:那這樣的話,我可以向龍王祈福求財嗎?
隆普:唉,這就大錯特錯了!老是想著依賴別人,只會去請求別人而不靠自己努力,這樣能成功嗎?龍王也是輪迴中的眾生,是我們的同伴,應當彼此尊重,各自隨緣而生,不是用來跪拜的。這種行為超出了佛陀的教導。拜得越多,越遠離智慧,遠離佛法。
向龍王跪拜祈求並不是佛陀的教義。不要做超出教義的事。所謂的好運和財富,若總是伸手向別人索取,只會淪為乞丐。不努力,不行動,卻只會張嘴要東西,這種人和雛鳥有什麼不同?明明有手有腳,為什麼不靠自己去爭取?總是靠別人,最終只會成為一個“高級乞丐”,一個受過高等教育的乞討者。
像豬和狗,也是我們的輪迴同伴,為什麼不向它們祈求?它們也是世間的眾生啊!
信徒:可那不一樣啊,豬狗不能賜給我好運和財富。
隆普:那你怎麼知道龍王就能賜給你好運和財富呢?
信徒:(沉默無語)
隆普:聰明人連豬狗也能帶來好運。有人養豬養狗,透過勞動獲得財富,那也是好運和福報啊!好運和財富來自努力,而不是伸手索取。那些透過勞動得來的,不是高等教育的乞丐行為,而是真正的成果。
龍王是存在的,但不應跪拜祈求好運。明白了嗎?
「關於‘kathina’,它並不涉及百萬或幾十萬的錢財。
有些錢財不多的人因此不敢參與獻布,
而那些驕傲自大的修行人卻輕視、議論他們,
說:『哎呀!這簡直是個微不足道的kathina,得的東西少得可憐。 ’
於是,錢財不多的人更不敢去做kathina了。
實際上,‘kathina’這個字的意思,是一種叫做‘สะดึง’的木框,
是一種四方形的木器,用於固定布料以便縫紉。
在古代,尤其是隆普曼時代,人們用手工縫製棉布。
在二戰時期,這種木框用於將布料拉緊,以方便縫紉。
‘kathina’的本意,是允許比丘更換法衣。
因此,他們會迅速裁剪袈裟。
我們森林派僧團在kathina期間會使用白布,
接收布料後,以此佈料作為適時的象徵。
發願者會說出供養詞,然後將布料縫製、染色和裁剪,
並確保在一天內完成,製作出至少一套袈裟、僧伽衣或上衣。 」

"We shouldn't be afraid of things like tigers, preta or ghosts. Such things wouldn't cause us to fall into hell.
Instead, things such as greed, anger, delusion and lust, these are the things that can lead us to hell easily."

1. Don’t look at other people and then compare yourself to them. You and him/her are different persons. The practice of the Dhamma is an individual affair belonging to yourself alone. Don’t go around boasting, but neither should you make yourself suffer over other people.
2. Don’t give up on pawana. Even if its not easy, just do it. Difficulties must be endured. Dukkha must be battled against. An analogy is like a swimmer, if you stop swimming, you will drown and can’t reach the other side of the river. Don’t ever be discouraged.
3. We can’t stop others from gossiping about us. But we can restrain our own minds to avoid suffering over what they say. Don’t pay any attention to their words. Solve it at your own heart.

Background: A devotee who likes to make merit and do good deeds finds himself/herself upset when other people gossip about what they have done.
LP Ha: Whether we do good or commit evil sins, we will still get hit by all kinds of gossip. Even if they don’t gossip about good things, they will still gossip about bad things, so we will get dragged in.
We must make our hearts like the sun. The sun rises in the east, crosses the sky, and sets in the west. Some people may like it whereas others don’t.
For example, people who want to dry their clothes like it. But people who do manual work under the sun may not. When it rains, the farmers like it. But the people doing laundry won’t like it.
Whatever the case, the sun is still rising and transversing the sky in accordance to its duty. You don’t see the sun losing strength and motivation and stop moving.
If you do a good deed, it’s a blessing and anumodana. But you have to make your heart like the sun. Whether people praise or criticise it, it still does its duty steadily.

The 5 Year Old Novice Monk - Samanera Uthumphon
Samanera Uthumphon has been making the news recently when Royal Noble Consort Chao Khun Phra Sineenat Bilaskalayani went to pay her respects to him. Samanera Uthumphon was able to chant the patimokkha even before he was 5 years old. The patimokkha is the basic code of monastic conduct, which is very difficult to learn. Some slow monks may even take more than a decade to memorise and get their recitation correct.
Samanera Uthumphon received many great monks' confirmation that his parami is already full, so they managed to persuade his parents to let him ordain, even though he is of such young age. One of these monks was Luang Pu Ha Supharo, the monk who can speak to dinosaurs I wrote about earlier this year. Samanera Uthumphon has displayed excellent conduct, much better behaved than the 5 year old Singaporean kids who only know how to watch videos on their iPads.
This reminds me of Sumana the Novice Arahant.
"I was newly ordained as a monk, and I was only seven years old. One day, I tamed a very vicious king snake, that had great supernormal powers, using my own supernormal powers.
That day I was bringing water from the great lake Anotatta (a lake located in the Himalayas, famed for the purity of its cool waters. Sumana would have had to use his psychic powers to fetch water from there) for my preceptor.
The great teacher saw me. Pointing me out, the great teacher, the Buddha said this:
Sāriputta, look at that young monk bringing a water pot. He is perfectly stilled inwardly.
His behavior is pleasing to others. Even the sight of him is wonderful for us. That novice monk is skilled in supernormal powers. He is excellent in the Dhamma. He is a pupil of Anuruddha.
He was made a great person by a great person. He was made a noble person by a noble person. He was trained and disciplined by Anuruddha who has already completed the path.
That novice Sumana has attained the highest peace. He is an enlightened one. But he doesn’t want others to know that he is."

When samanera Uthumphon took care LP La in latter's last years, LP said that he saw many angels following Samanera. He asked the angels ' why so many people has come, who are you from? '
The deva replied to him that he was an angel and a disciple of the novice Uthumphom. They will wait and always protect him

#他已經修行了很多世。你明白嗎?他從都dusit天來。這個國家是你的最後一個國家。心是不死的心,收集任何東西,堅持每一個生命,直到最後一世。 ”

“別擔心沙彌。 他的心非常堅強和堅定。 他做了很多 。不同層次的天神還是要來守護的。 並一起祝賀他這一生 在佛教中行善行正的人,總是受到天神的保護。”

龍普聞言,道:“幸運造就了所有人。 出生和創造 讓它發生,讓它發生在主人的心中。 沙彌修行得好 我們也必須相應地進行修行。”
#Luang Pu Chanta Kulchetto 很仁慈地告訴 Yom 家族要小心 Uthumphon 沙彌。
#Reverend Grandfather Chantha的工作 Kulchettoth 是徹底放棄。不要拿任何東西 跟隨佛陀的腳步 證明佛陀所走的路,直到心中清楚。
