《Luang ta maha bua comments on gambling》
"……Regarding this gambling issue, wow!
It’s really prominent in our Thailand.
Everywhere you turn, it's gambling. Gambling is very harmful.
There's no principle, no trust.
Listen,
This is what the Buddha taught.
We lose wealth, and when we gain, it’s not stable or reliable.
We gain only to be lured into ambition,
and then we lose again.
Listen, he says no one can be trusted.
Those gamblers are not reliable at all.
Their minds are wandering; they become thugs,
evil within themselves.
Listen, both men and women are thugs within themselves.
You can’t even trust the owner; the money is in the pocket,
and they can grab it for gambling whenever they want—gone!
The owner can’t even trust themselves and steals from themselves.
They deposit money in banks, and robbers come to rob banks.
Have we ever heard of it? It happens rarely,
making noise all over the world, but we rob our own money in various places.
With banks, how much is lost? Quietly, these great robbers—
the owners rob from themselves.
And they’re thugs within themselves too.
They get used to their unreliable habits; they can’t even trust themselves.
Even within the same family, they can’t trust each other.
If someone is a gambling thug, those people cannot be trusted.
Just like parents and children, if any child likes to gamble,
the parents don’t trust them. See? They can’t be relied upon.
Is this a good thing? Why are we so crazy about gambling?
Oh, it’s really strange! It’s like
a wave of the ocean that can’t be resisted—
the wave of gambling in our Thailand.
This is a significant loss…"

《Luang ta maha bua

🟠 Wealth needs to be divided into four parts 🟠
The Buddha said that wealth should be divided into four parts, namely:
Repaying old debts, which refers to parents and benefactors; assistance and care should be given according to one’s ability.
Becoming a new creditor; we need to care for our children, right?
Saving well, which is to make merits and doing good.
throw to the cliff, which refers to food.
These four parts cannot be equally divided into four shares; they should be allocated according to the situation. Special attention needs to be given to "throw to the cliff," as having too little in this regard can cause distress and negatively impact oneself, so it must be allocated reasonably.
Regarding donations, the Buddha said: If it oppresses and harms oneself, it is asceticism and torturing oneself.
Additionally, in terms of donations, the Buddha advised us to observe and consider whether it is appropriate to give or not. If we donate within the realm of evildoers, the merit will be little or possibly nonexistent.
If we know the other party is worthy of donation, we should donate; if they are not worthy, we should refrain from donating.
If after donating, they go and drink alcohol, take drugs, or pose a danger to others, it is better not to donate. That would be aiding robbers and helping thieves.

《No need to seek!》
Many people seek this and that,
but in fact, there’s no need to seek!
Just make your mind better.
Just improve your speech.
Just enhance your behavior.
Why do we say this?
--- Some people seek power and status. Where do power and status come from? They come from others! Others must obey us, listen to us, acknowledge us, and respect us; only then do we have power.
If our thoughts, speech, and actions are not good, who will obey us? Who will respect us?
Does praying to deities help? Do superstitions help?
--- Some people seek wealth. Where does wealth come from? It comes from others!
If we do business, money comes from customers.
If we are employees, money comes from our boss.
If our character is poor, dishonest, and we only want money from customers without considering their needs, will they be willing to give us money? Will others want to do business with us?
If we, as employees, are lazy, irresponsible, dishonest, with a bad heart, poor speech, and bad behavior, will our boss keep us? Will the boss raise our salary? Will anyone hire us?
At this time, does praying to deities help? Do superstitions help?
--- Some people seek beauty.
But if we often frown and harbor negative emotions, does that make them beautiful?
At this time, does praying to deities help? Do superstitions help?
A compassionate, pure, and happy heart will make our face shine, even without cosmetic surgery or makeup; the complexion will be radiant and exceptionally attractive.
--- Some people seek health and longevity,
but they are often filled with negative emotions and defilements.
Is this how to avoid cancer?
At this time, does praying to deities help? Do superstitions help?
If the heart is free of defilements and maintains a cheerful mindset, it ensures we can live out the lifespan that the Kamma original brings us.
--- Some people seek intelligence and wisdom,
but their hearts are very chaotic and dirty, filled with defilements.
At this time, does praying to deities help? Do superstitions help?
Once we remove the 'self', our hearts will immediately possess mindfulness, stillness, and wisdom.
Even without seeking, intelligence and wisdom will come to us.

We do not need to rely on professions such as government officials, politicians, or monks. We must take these roles and serve selflessly, finding joy and happiness in our sacrifices, and fulfilling our duties completely.
Do not think like those who do not understand, believing that accepting any position is a burden and not wanting to take on responsibilities. If you want to sacrifice, do not retreat into the wilderness or live in isolation. We must understand and renew our intentions.

We must think carefully. Wealthy people suffer because they do not know contentment. Poor people are often focused on the self; they do not sacrifice, find no happiness in work or studying, and thus remain poor. The self brings suffering in both cases. Wealthy individuals suffer from a lack of contentment, while poor individuals suffer because they focus on the self.

"The Buddhist Principles of Earning Money"
The title says "earning money," but actually, it's wrong (laugh). Money is not earned; it is given by others.
Isn't that correct?
Money is given by our clients.
Money is given by our bosses.
If we want to attract a lot of wealth, we need to make customers and bosses willingly give us money.
How can we make them willingly give us money? By bringing them joy, fulfilling their needs, and solving their problems.
Isn't that the original purpose of work?
For example, nurses and doctors exist to care for and treat patients.
Engineers, designers, and construction workers exist to provide comfortable living environments for others. Work is fundamentally about solving others' problems, fulfilling their needs, and bringing them happiness.
Therefore, a legitimate job is inherently a good deed. When we genuinely care for others, sacrifice ourselves, and help others, we accumulate merit. What is merit? The Buddha said it is synonymous with happiness! (AN7.62)
Luang Por Ganha said: "When we find happiness in our work, we gain everything—material wealth, prosperity, and wisdom."
Yes, the better, kinder, and happier our hearts are, the more responsible we are in our work, the better we perform, and the more happiness we bring to our clients and bosses. When they are happy, they will willingly give us money.
The kinder and better we are, the more wealth we attract. Regardless of our jobs, we should hold on to the belief: "I am here to help everyone! not to get something from them!" Such genuine intention can actually attract the most money.
The Buddha once said that laziness and not working are barriers to wealth (AN10.73). If we lack motivation and are reluctant to help others, solve their problems, and bring them happiness, then the good deeds we plant will diminish, and the money we attract will also decrease.
The Buddha also said that if one wishes for wealth to arise, the wise should uphold precepts (iti 76). This means being empathetic, not harming oneself, and not harming others. Why can we attract wealth? Because when we uphold precepts and do not harm ourselves or others, we can bring great security to others. If we are in business, clients will naturally come to us! If we are subordinates, our superiors will value us, promote us, and increase our salaries because we are trustworthy.
Moreover, what does it mean to be a person who upholds precepts and is kind? It means they have strong mindfulness! Ajahn Golf once said: "When mindfulness is weak, people tend to commit unwholesome deeds." When mindfulness is strong, what does that represent? It means the heart is clear and pure, allowing us to clearly know our interests, others' interests, and the interests of both (AN1.45). Then they are happy, and we are happy too. This is the manifestation of wisdom.
A wise person will know what should and should not be done; they will not suffer financial losses due to negligence. Hence, the Buddha said that those who uphold precepts can accumulate vast wealth (AN5.213).
Where does wealth come from? It comes from the wholesome deeds of generosity and wholesome conditions. It arises from "goodness." Therefore, the Buddha also said that if someone possesses the following four conditions, they will quickly gain substantial wealth:
1.Living in a suitable area, which is interpreted in commentary as being in a place with a monastic community and Buddhists. Why is this relevant? Because of the influence! When we are close to good people, we become kind and wise ourselves. This will benefit our wealth attraction. If we cannot afford to move, do not worry; because of the modern network, through platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Line, WeChat, etc., we can still achieve the same effect of influence.
2.Relying on good people. Without doubt, good people are wise people (MN129). Their hearts are clear and untainted by defilements, allowing them to see the interests of themselves and others and benefit both. By befriending them, we naturally gain their insights and thus benefit. By being good to Buddhists and the monastic community and making offerings to them, we plant many meritorious seeds of generosity or other good deeds, leading to future prosperity.
3. Establishing correct aspirations. This is interpreted as in commentary, for example, previously lacking confidence and then now build confidence. In short, it is the determination to become a good person with various virtues. When we make such aspirations, the future changes immediately. Because when a person's heart is good, they can attract all good things, as the scriptures say: wealth, fame, happiness.
4.Having done good in the past. If one has accumulated good karma in the past, it will be easier to become wealthy. But do not worry; anyone who can fulfill the above three points has essentially cultivated the good kamma connected with wisdom in past lives, which makes us fulfil point 1-3.
If our lives are filled with unwholesomeness, it is essentially impossible to become wealthy. Once, the Buddha said that he had never seen fishmongers, butchers, or killers making a living from such professions accumulate and enjoy vast wealth, rich enough to buy various means of transportation, because they focus on engaging in the evil act of killing (AN6.18). Unwholesome deeds will never attract many good things. The Buddha continued to say that such evil deeds will only bring long-lasting disadvantages and suffering.
You might then ask, what about those who run casinos or liquor businesses, who seem to make a lot of money? There are scammers making a fortune daily.
It is explained in commentary that if someone's heart is focused on unwholesomeness, they will not achieve success. Even if they gain fame or good things from it, it will not be lasting.
Those running casinos are very greedy. They are not here to help the public but are exploiting others with a greedy mindset to gain wealth. Because the odds of everyone winning are adjusted to be extremely minimal. They calculate that they will certainly make money while we will certainly lose. Hence, some say, "Long gambling always leads to loss." The Buddha also said that indulging in gambling is a gateway to financial ruin (DN31). For example, Luang Por Ganha mentioned that the former Thai king had previously stopped casinos from invading Thailand.
Wise rulers do not welcome them. Wise people also condemn them. And as it is explained, gambling, due to its inherent nature, is easily suppressed by the government; therefore, its prosperity is not lasting or stable.
Many people go bankrupt due to gambling, lose their families, and even commit suicide; they may sometimes resent the casino bosses.
Casino bosses cannot live comfortably and confidently, and sometimes they regret it and feel uneasy.
Because they seek to gain large sums of money through illegal means, that powerful greed will leave them feeling chaotic and uneasy, which is indeed a form of suffering.
Therefore, if they rely solely on casinos for a living and constantly think about engaging in such unwholesome deeds, they will not achieve much prosperity. Their mental health will also suffer. Those wealthy casino bosses are actually involved in multiple industries and do not focus solely on gambling; that is why they can become billionaires.
The same applies to liquor merchants. Wise governments know that alcohol is not a good thing; it can cause many social and medical problems, so they will impose restrictions and crack down on it, preventing it from thriving too much. If they were to focus entirely on the liquor industry, constantly thinking about how to get alcohol into people's hands, they would not make much money, and at the same time, they would easily encounter various disasters that disturb their bodies and minds (AN5.148).
What about scammers? Making a hundred million a day! Those who truly engage in scamming are often working long hours, precisely because they focus incessantly on the unwholesome act of deception; thus, they cannot accumulate much money. They are merely pawns! They are just exploited employees or victims who have been lured in! The real money is made by the bosses of the scam organizations. But who wants to be scammed? Everyone who has been scammed is certainly very angry and sad, looking for ways to report it; wise people will condemn them, and the government will vigorously crack down on them and pursue them.
They cannot live openly. They are restricted even in their purchases, fearing being tracked by law enforcement. Therefore, the money they earn cannot be fully utilized, nor can they enjoy social status and reputation.
Moreover, because of their extreme greed, they engage in illegal activities, which leads to their chaotic and heavy heart. They live in fear and anxiety. When they see news about scams, they often panic, unsure if it is about them. This is a significant suffering.
The money they earn is also likely to bring them physical and mental disasters and unrest (AN5.148).
Anyone who makes a living from evil deeds is planting the seeds for suffering and lower realms. They will certainly regret it in the future.
Therefore, any wealth that brings peace of mind must come from goodness. Any great wealth must arise from great goodness.
The people most capable of generating good hearts are wage earners. They simply focus on doing good and helping others; they don’t have to think much about money, and by the end of the month, the money will come.
Next in line are those who run their own businesses. Because sometimes, there's an unavoidable desire for profit, which may lead to some greed, causing inner unrest.
However, if we run our businesses with a good heart, we won't draw the profit towards our mind, but think of how to benefit those around us, society, the country, monks, and the impoverished. When we do business without attachment, we can then conduct ourselves with integrity. Our products are meant to bring joy and utility to customers. The prices are reasonable and not exorbitant. When our products are quality and the prices fair, we naturally gain the public's favor and praise, avoiding social criticism and condemnation. For instance, Ajahn Prasan, great disciple of Luang Por Pramote, who is said to have seen the Dharma, is also a businessman with several companies.
Money is not earned; it is willingly given to us by others.
If we live with a good heart and do not crave for wealth, we can instead accumulate the most wealth, along with reputation, status, happiness, mental health, and all good things.
Ajahn Brahm
Ajahn Brahm
Ajahn Brahm
Betty
Jarold
Tera
Ajahn Brahm
Oh, friends. To earn wealth, one must work hard. Buddha mentioned in AN10.73 that "laziness and not working are obstacles to wealth."
The Bible in Genesis 3:19 also says: “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
See! Even Catholicism and Christianity teach this—if you want to have food as a householder, you must work hard; money won’t just fall from the sky while you sit idly at home.
However, if you work only for money, there’s little happiness and much suffering and worry. First, for the sake of money, we toil away. When we work hard but fail to achieve the wealth we desire, we feel sad and disheartened. We also constantly worry about how to protect our assets, which brings distress and anxiety. If our assets are taken or destroyed, it brings sadness as well (Ref MN13, MN14).
So, wealth is not something to be greedily pursued; greed brings much suffering. But if we work merely to help others, we can find joy in that. When we do our work well, genuinely with kindness and responsibility to assist others, money will come to us naturally. We don’t need to crave it; it will come on its own.
The Bible’s statement, “you are taken from the ground; for dust you are and to dust you will return,” is also very interesting.
Where does our body come from? Oh, from our parents' sperm and egg. According to Buddhist classification, it consists of the four great elements: earth, water, fire, and wind, plus space and consciousness—this awareness, which includes as the elements of space and consciousness.
Therefore, don’t think of this body as ours. It is merely made up of natural elements. When we die, the body returns to nature.
And this immortal consciousness continues like flowing water, combining with a new body formed by the four great elements to create a new life.
Oh, is this consciousness the 'self' and 'mine'? It is not. No one can control when it ceases or arises. If we could choose, wouldn’t we want this awareness to arise in the womb of a wealthy person, right? Then we could live a life without having to work, right?
Everything is just the movement and combination of natural elements.
