Actually, some national leaders possess certain qualities that are truly worth learning from and rejoicing in.
Everyone has committed both good and bad deeds.
This is especially true for national leaders, who often create vast good or bad kamma through their actions.
A single correct decision can generate more and greater good kamma than what many people accumulate in their entire lives.
A single wrong decision can generate more and greater bad kamma than what many people accumulate in their entire lives.
Right now, we should not focus solely on their negative aspects but also recognize their good and positive qualities.
In fact, have we ever wondered why they became national leaders? Because they have the support of the people! Even if they don’t have the support of the entire nation, they at least have the backing of their political party. Even if they don’t have the support of their party, they at least have the loyalty of their close allies—otherwise, how could they rise to such positions?
They must possess certain virtues that enabled them to gather so much support and power!
We can observe that they have strong confidence and determination; they are diligent; they are mindful and cautious; they possess greater stillness than ordinary people; they are smarter than ordinary people; they have better mental states and mental health than ordinary people; their minds are gentle, relaxed, and humorous....
Some of these qualities are neutral, such as determination, diligence, and stillness.
Others are virtuous qualities, such as mindfulness, good mental health, a gentle mind, and a relaxed mind.
If they spent their entire days under pressure and in an unwholesome state of mind, they would surely collapse quickly—just like many people suffering from emotional disorders.
For example, some nations invade other countries while acting as if they are righteous superheroes—isn’t that shameless? 😂 Morally and karmically, this is wrong and unwholesome.
But despite facing so much international public opinion pressure and criticism, they have managed to persist until now—that’s truly not simple.
Why can he persist until now?
Because he has strong faith—he believes he is righteous and protecting his citizens.
When he believes he is a righteous superhero, it means he thinks his precept is excellent 😂.
In that case, he feels no regret or inner turmoil and can maintain a certain level of stillness to strengthen and sustain his inner power.
Especially, why can someone become a national leader? It must be because they created vast good kamma in the past, resulting in great fortune in this life. They must possess a powerful force of goodness.
Wow, we see that even after such a long war, they can still laugh and joke—that’s not simple~ They have relatively good mental health, they have a wholesome state of mind sometimes—it’s there.
But one thing is separate from another. As the initiator of war and aggression, many people have died; that bad kamma is extremely vast.
Although they might spend some time in a relaxed and wholesome state of mind, it’s inevitable that there are more unwholesome moments, such as anger, fear, greed, or restlessness. If such a state of mind arises at the moment of death, or if they see the vengeful spirits of soldiers appearing as kammic signs—when bad kamma ripens at death, they will fall into hell....
Remember, we should only rejoice in the good; never rejoice in the bad...
Ajahn Suchart
As long as we have a bit of wisdom, we will understand that worldly achievements and happiness are always mixed with suffering.
For example, some people fall in love and get married, and they feel immense joy and happiness; yet we know that in the future, they are bound to experience suffering, even coming to us in tears.
Some people have a son and are so excited that they almost go crazy: "I’m a dad now!!!" However, we also know that they will inevitably face anger and pain because of their son.
Similarly, when a person gains great wealth, fame, status, or power, as long as they are attached and ecstatic about it, we know that suffering awaits them ahead.
However, sometimes it is still the right attitude to feel happy for them. They have indeed obtained what they have longed for, and from it, they derive happiness.
Ajahn Suchart also teaches that ' being successful, getting married or getting a raise, you congratulate him/her—this is muditā' .
If we remain indifferent to anyone's worldly achievements or even feel jealous, that is not the attitude of Buddhism.
“...Whoever has more fortune and merit than us,
is more skilled, better, and more prosperous than us,
we should express our joy for them.
This means appreciating that
they have made efforts to cultivate their merit.
Now, the merit they have built
is bearing fruit in their lives.
If we wish to be like them,
we must strive to build our own merit,
and in the future,
we too can become like them.
It is better to think this way than to envy them,
because no matter how much we envy, we still won’t gain anything.
True happiness and prosperity
come from accumulating various merits.”
