為什麼他們會這樣?
就是因為他們有五蓋中的疑蓋了。
當我們心有正定時,五蓋被壓制,包括疑蓋。此時頭腦會變得很清晰,腦筋轉得很快,但同時失誤的機率很低。
就好像快刀斬亂麻那樣
可謂快、狠、準!
Have we ever observed people who act in a leisurely yet indecisive manner, hesitating and unable to make decisions?
Why do they behave like this?
It is precisely because they are hindered by the hindrance of doubt (vicikicchā), one of the five hindrances.
When the mind has right stillness (sammā samādhi), the five hindrances are suppressed—including the hindrance of doubt. At that time, the mind becomes very clear, thoughts move quickly, yet the chance of making mistakes is very low.
It’s like a sharp knife cutting through tangled hemp—
Fast, decisive, and accurate!
It takes a long time to understand the nature of what doubt is, and it's only like many of these things—and I'll say this similar again later on—it's only when things disappear that you can know what they are. When water disappears, then the fish can understand what water was. When you're in the water, lived in the water, born in the water all your life in the water, how can you know what water is? But when the water disappears, oh, that's what water is.
Do you know what air is? We live in air; we breathe it. But sometimes you go to places like Tiger's Nest in Bhutan, and the air is so thin there—there's hardly much air there—so it's very hard to breathe. You get a little bit of understanding what air is when it disappears and vanishes. That's when you can know it.
So what wisdom is, is seeing what a thing is. A lot of the time, it has to vanish first of all. When it does, you know this is not a theory; it's not inference; it's real bare experience. And that's actually where you start to know what these things like khandhas are. These are the five khandhas—I call them components of existence. You know, the khandhas is the Pali word, and what translations do you know the khandhas as? I prefer "components of existence" because that describes what they really are.
You know, the first of those khandhas is stuff—it's not just body; it's like wood, it's like metal, it's like air, it's like space. I love the ideas.

要理解疑惑的本質需要很長的時間,這就像許多其他事物一樣——我稍後還會再類似地說一次——只有當事物消失時,你才能真正知道它是什麼。當水消失時,魚兒才能明白水是什麼。當你一生都在水中出生、在水中生活、在水中長大,你怎麼可能知道水是什麼?但是當水消失時,哦,原來那就是水。
你知道空氣是什麼嗎?我們生活在空氣中,我們呼吸它。但有時候你去到像不丹虎穴寺(Tiger's Nest)那樣的地方,那裡的空氣非常稀薄——幾乎沒有多少空氣——所以呼吸非常困難。當空氣消失、變得稀薄時,你才會稍微明白空氣是什麼。那就是你能夠認識它的時刻。
因此,智慧就是看見一件事物的本質。很多時候,它必須先消失,你才能看見。當它消失時,你所知道的不是理論、不是推論,而是真實的、赤裸的體驗。這正是你開始認識這些像「蘊」(khandhas)之類事物的起點。這就是五蘊——我稱之為「存在的組成部分」(components of existence)。你們知道,「蘊」是巴利文詞,你們通常把 khandhas 翻譯成什麼?我比較喜歡「存在的組成部分」,因為這更準確地描述了它們的真實面貌。
你知道,第一個蘊就是「物質」——不只是身體,它就像木頭、金屬、空氣、空間一樣。我很喜歡這些概念。
