Today is the Hong Kong university JUPAS results release day.
Guess what the top scorers, second-place finishers and elite students will all choose?
No need to guess! Of course it’s Medicine! 😂
In this world, there is no such thing as free will.
All of our choices are the product of countless conditions coming together.
Although Professor Francis Chan already published an article on 20 July 2026 listing seven reasons not to study medicine, many people still won’t take it to heart.
They still believe that studying medicine brings a sense of superiority, that future patients will be grateful to them, that it means high salary and a stable career.
Their elders continue to brainwash them into thinking being a doctor is good.
The medical dramas they used to chase have already brainwashed them into thinking doctors are cool and sacred.
Senior students posting photos in white coats on Instagram make them feel that studying medicine is prestigious.
All the high-scoring classmates choose medicine.
When all these conditions converge, once they score high enough, they will inevitably choose medicine.
Sigh! 😂
Suppose — just suppose — the conditions were flipped:
Studying engineering brings a sense of superiority, clients will be very grateful, it means high salary and a stable career.
Elders brainwash them into thinking being an engineer is good.
There used to be dramas specially about engineers that brainwashed them into thinking engineers are cool and sacred.
Seniors post photos on Instagram showing off engineers’ work clothes, making them feel that studying engineering is prestigious.
All the high-scoring classmates choose engineering.
What would the top students choose then?
This “choice”, this “will” is not really ours at all. It is merely the result formed by the combination of many conditions.
Yet, such causes lead to such effects.
If we do not work hard and do not use wisdom, we will certainly not succeed.
If we are willing to work hard and use wisdom, we may succeed.
If we can see through this fact and let go of all past, present and future choices, we will no longer feel regret or pressure; yet at the same time we will remain positive and proactive.

more about eliminating regret:
It's okay to do it. Maybe feel a sense of shame for half an hour just to remind yourself, "This is not what I should have done," but not for the whole of your life. For goodness sake, please let it go.
And anyway, just because he did a stupid act, why did you do that? Sometimes you can't really judge yourself—why ? that's beyond certainty. So because of that, please, please let it go.
And if you really want to understand why, you got Angulimala. He was—he really was—a serial killer. There must be something about Buddhist meditators or serial killers. Okay, I don't know what crime you've done—probably hardly anything at all. But anyway, whatever it was, just don't do it again." That's all. Shame does not help.
Shame—you never feel good enough. You don't feel worth it. I know when people have addictions to drugs or to pornography or to alcohol, whatever that addiction is, they feel they're just hopeless, that they were just a defective human being, so they don't belong anywhere. And so they don't even think they should—you know—they deserve to be forgiven. But of course, everyone does.
And Angulimala killed so many human beings. He really was a murderer. When the Buddha saw him, the Buddha said, "Stop. Stop worrying about that past. Where'd it go? Stop living in the past. Stop worrying about the future. Stop. Be still." He became an enlightened being.
..I don't know what crimes you have done and you feel guilt and shame about that. I'm sure it wasn't as bad as Angulimala. And the Buddha allowed Angulimala to become a monk. He allowed him to— not allowed him—but Angulimala became an enlightened being. So there's no barriers for whoever said this, that he did a crime a few times years back. As years back, it's passed. Let it go.

"Regret"
Each of us has done foolish things and made mistakes, right? Who says otherwise? Don’t fool us (laugh). Thoughts, words, and actions driven by greed, hatred, and delusion are foolishness.
Sometimes, as a person practices and improves, they realize just how foolish they were in the past.
For example, when Luang Por Thongpoon reached a certain level of practice, he discovered how dirty this body really is. Why was his heart so foolish before, clinging to this body?
If a person becomes an arahant, although they have done foolish things in the past, they will not regret it because regret is also a form of defilement. But that’s not us. Whenever we remember our past mistakes, we feel ashamed and regretful.
When we regret, does our mind feel good? Of course not. So when we regret, we are being foolish. Yet we keep thinking and thinking, endlessly thinking of the past, and that is very foolish.
In fact, there’s no need to regret. Every thought we have, every word we speak, every action we take is actually a combination of conditions. We do not have the right to choose.
As Ajahn Suchart said, no matter what happens, or what circumstances lead you to act, it is considered the Dhamma (nature) providing you the conditions to act. It is not your own will or desire; it is the law and the environment that actively brings these things to you.
When we encounter these series of conditions, we must act accordingly. If anyone had all the same conditions as you, they would also think, say, and do the same.
This is a matter of nature, not of any individual, and it is not your matter. This world consists only of causes and effects; "you" are not involved in it.
Therefore, there is no need to regret because "you" do not exist; the so-called "you" is merely a combination of conditions.
Ajahn Yiu, who was sent to Hong Kong by Luang Por Ganha to propagate the Dhamma, was once asked by a follower:
With 227 monastic precepts being so numerous, how long did it take him to learn and master them?
He roughly replied that it was difficult to answer because mastering the precepts is a continuous process of making mistakes, breaking the rules, and then correcting oneself.
Presumably, if we were to ordain, we would all experience the same, because 227 precepts are indeed too many.
Similarly, life is filled with so many experiences and is so long that each of us inevitably makes mistakes, hurting ourselves or others. This is a very normal part of life.
Therefore, we should forgive ourselves.
We should learn from our mistakes and resolve not to repeat them in the future; there’s no need to constantly dwell on the past or regret it endlessly.
No matter how serious the mistakes we have made in the past, as long as they are not the five heinous crimes (maliciously causing the Buddha to bleed, killing an Arahant, killing one’s father, killing one’s mother, or causing schism in a harmonious Sangha), it’s not the end.
As long as anyone, from now until death, maintains unwavering faith in the Triple Gem and upholds the pure five precepts, the Buddha declared that person to be a stream-enterer, one who has permanently escaped the lower realms and will certainly attain nibanna in the future (AN5.179).
"Nothing to Regret"
What if we've done something foolish in the past?
It doesn’t matter; the past is already gone. Why hold onto it and regret it?
Regret arises from wrong views, incorrect perceptions, and misguided thoughts.
So let's solve from the root.
The Buddha teaches us to view things this way: whether it’s the past, present, or future; all that constitutes our 'self' includes:
The physical body
feelings
perceptions
Will and volitions
Awareness
None of these actually belong to us; we are not them, and they do not constitute a real self—this is how we should perceive them (MN62).
If we think "it does not belong to me," we can stop regarding the so-called 'self' of the past as something we possesses, instantly lifting the burden.
"I am not this" is meant to counteract self-labeling and self-inflation. Once we adopt this mindset, we can no longer feel inferior because the past 'self' is no longer relevant to us.
"This is not a true self" is to combat the wrong view that mistakenly believes a 'self' truly exists.
Whether body or mind, they are constantly changing, uncontrollable, and cannot be maintained; there is fundamentally no unchanging self.
At this point, the mind immediately feels empty and relaxed; there is no more regret, right?
便不再重蹈覆轍;
人人皆曾有過失、有正行;
🌸 **Keep the mind pure. Though the past has passed and cannot be changed,
today and tomorrow, diligently recite prayers and meditate—
bad kamma will gradually lighten.**
In the past,
both evil and good were mixed together.
Now that we have reached today, we know what is unwholesome,
so we do not do it again.
If we continually create goodness,
bad kamma and unwholesomeness
will diminish on their own.
Before, we did not know right from wrong,
acting out of ignorance.
Everyone makes mistakes, everyone does right.
Once we have learned,
we improve ourselves,
and virtuous qualities become our own.
