「會有的,須摩那。」世尊說:「須摩那,那位布施的人,出家之後,會在五方面勝過那位不布施的人——多半是被別人請求才受用袈裟,很少不經別人請求就受用;
多半是被別人請求才受用飲食,很少不經別人請求就受用;
多半是被別人請求才受用住處,很少不經別人請求就受用;
和他一起共住的同梵行者,多半以令人歡喜的身業對待他,很少以不歡喜的身業對待他;
多半以令人合意的語業對待他,很少以不合意的語業對待他;
多半以令人合意的意業對待他,很少以不合意的意業對待他;

Why do some kitties get spoiled in every possible way—and even end up treated like a “land spirit”? 😂
It’s just blessing. In past lives they accumulated the merit of giving.
Giving is important. Please don’t take it lightly.
On one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery (Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme).
Then Princess Sumanā (Sumanā rājakumārī), accompanied by five hundred chariots and five hundred princesses, approached the Blessed One. Having approached, she paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Princess Sumanā said to the Blessed One:
“Bhante, suppose there were two disciples of the Blessed One, equal in faith, equal in Precept, equal in wisdom—one a giver, the other a non-giver. After the breakup of the body, after death, they would be reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. Bhante, when they had become devas, would there be any distinction, any difference between them?”
“There would be, Sumanā,” the Blessed One said. “Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having become a deva, surpasses that non-giver in five respects: heavenly lifespan, heavenly appearance, heavenly pleasure, heavenly glory, and heavenly sovereignty. Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having become a deva, surpasses that non-giver in these five respects.”
“But if, Bhante, they pass away from there and come back to this world, when they have become human beings, Bhante, would there be any distinction, any difference between them?”
“There would be, Sumanā,” the Blessed One said. “Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having become a human being, surpasses that non-giver in five respects: human lifespan, human appearance, human pleasure, human glory, and human sovereignty. Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having become a human being, surpasses that non-giver in these five respects.”
“But if, Bhante, both of them go forth from the household life into homelessness, after going forth, Bhante, would there be any distinction, any difference between them?”
“There would be, Sumanā,” the Blessed One said. “Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having gone forth, surpasses that non-giver in five respects: he uses robes mostly when invited, and seldom when not invited; he uses almsfood mostly when invited, and seldom when not invited; he uses lodgings mostly when invited, and seldom when not invited; he uses medicines and requisites for the sick mostly when invited, and seldom when not invited.
Those who live the holy life with him treat him mostly with agreeable bodily action, and seldom with disagreeable bodily action; mostly with agreeable verbal action, and seldom with disagreeable verbal action; mostly with agreeable mental action, and seldom with disagreeable mental action; they bring him mostly agreeable offerings, and seldom disagreeable offerings.
Sumanā, the one who was a giver, having gone forth, surpasses that non-giver in these five respects.”
“But if, Bhante, both of them attain arahantship, after attaining arahantship, Bhante, would there be any distinction, any difference between them?”
“Here, Sumanā, I say there is no difference at all, that is, of liberation compared with liberation.”
“It is amazing, Bhante! It is extraordinary, Bhante! To this extent, Bhante, it is truly worthwhile to give gifts, truly worthwhile to make merit. For merit is of benefit even to one who has become a deva, of benefit even to one who has become a human being, of benefit even to one who has gone forth.”
“So it is, Sumanā! Sumanā, it is truly worthwhile to give gifts, truly worthwhile to make merit! Merit is of benefit even to one who has become a deva, of benefit even to one who has become a human being, of benefit even to one who has gone forth.”
This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Well-Gone One, the Teacher, further said:
“Just as the spotless moon,
moving through the element of space,
outshines with its radiance
all the hosts of stars in the world—
so too a person endowed with precepts,
a person of faith,
outshines by generosity
all the stingy people in the world.
Just as a thundering cloud,
wreathed in lightning, with a hundred peaks,
fills highland and lowland,
raining upon the earth—
so too one endowed with vision,
a disciple of the Perfectly Enlightened One,
a wise person, surpasses the stingy
in five respects:
in lifespan and glory,
in appearance and pleasure.
Surrounded by wealth,
after death he rejoices in heaven.”
(AN 5.31)
But please do not wish to be reborn as a pet. The kamma that leads to birth as an animal is necessarily unwholesome. It comes from a mind clouded by delusion at the time of death.
Even if they receive endless spoiling, those animals’ mental health is generally not very good, because their minds are covered by delusion—muddled, not clear, not bright, not full. And they have no opportunity to raise their own mental level or mental health.
By contrast, human beings and devas can raise their mental level and mental health through the practice of precept, samadhi (undistractability of mind), and wisdom. They can even attain the supreme happiness of jhāna and Nibbāna.

dung sắc và an lạc.
Được của cải vây quanh,
chết rồi vui trên trời.”
(AN 5.31)

(Ref. to pañcaputtakhādapetivatthu)
**English:**
The Buddha defined “kamma” as “intention” (AN 6.63).
Intention accompanied by greed, aversion, or delusion is unwholesome kamma.
Intention free from any greed, aversion, or delusion is wholesome kamma.
**【The Cognitive Process at the Time of Death and Relinking】**
According to the teachings of the Abhidhamma commentators, when we are dying, a death-proximate mind-door cognitive process arises. This process is special: because the javana cittas are weaker in power, they arise only five times instead of the usual seven (they themselves do not create new kamma; they merely serve as the channel through which past kamma matures into rebirth-producing kamma). After that, the death-consciousness (cuti citta) arises.
After the death-consciousness arises and ceases, the relinking consciousness (paṭisandhi citta) arises in the new life. The object it takes is the same object as that of the death-proximate javana cittas. Immediately following the javana cittas are sixteen life-continuum consciousnesses (bhavaṅga), which also take the object of the previous life’s death-proximate javana cittas. Then the first mind-door cognitive process (manodvāra-vīthi) arises, taking as its object the just-ceased relinking consciousness itself. The seven javana cittas within it are sense-sphere greed-rooted consciousnesses dissociated from wrong view and unprompted (diṭṭhigata-vippayutta asankhārika lobha-mūla citta); they are responsible for clinging to existence.
Thereafter, throughout the entire life, the inactive state of awareness (bhavaṅga) continues to take the object of the previous life’s death-proximate javana cittas.
Thus we see that the kind of mind with which one dies determines the kind of rebirth one obtains. Moreover, throughout the whole life one will tend to have similar tendencies and character.
**【Common Misconceptions】**
Ordinary people think:
- Dying with greed necessarily leads to rebirth as a ghost;
- Dying with aversion necessarily leads to rebirth in hell;
- Dying with delusion necessarily leads to rebirth as an animal.
But this is not entirely correct.
In reality, where one is reborn depends on the kamma that actually matures at the moment of death—that is, on the mind-door javana cittas at the time of dying. This world contains countless kinds of kamma and countless kinds of mind, so there are also countless kinds of states of existence.
Dying with greed can lead to rebirth in the ghost realm, the animal realm, or the hell realm.
Dying with aversion can lead to rebirth in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm.
Dying with delusion can lead to rebirth in the animal realm, the ghost realm, or the hell realm—because every unwholesome consciousness is accompanied by the mental factor of delusion.
**【The Ghost Realm】**
What kind of mind leads to falling into the ghost realm?
Clinging! Especially clinging to something as “this is mine.” For example, the editor knows of a mother who loved her family very much and clung strongly to them; after death she was reborn as a ghost, appearing in the house and visiting the family.
A mind of longing and attachment can also do so. Luang Por Pramote mentioned: “Great masters have certain skilful means. When the animals raised at the monastery are about to die, they make dedications of merit for them so that the mind does not become gloomy or sorrowful. For instance, if we raise a dog that is sick and about to die, and we take it to the hospital, the dog misses home very much. If it dies in front of strangers, the dog has no happiness; at the moment of death the mind is sad and gloomy—that is not good. So there are skilful means: we place our clothes that carry our scent beside it so that it can smell the scent and feel happy. When it dies with happiness, it can be reborn as a ghost.”
A mind of hunger and thirst can also cause rebirth in the ghost realm. For example, Luang Por Pramote mentioned that a lay devotee, while staying temporarily in the forest before meeting a great master, entered samadhi (undistractability of mind), made the mind bright, and saw a very radiant hungry ghost dressed in monastic robes. Luang Por said: “He was as tall as a mountain, walking and searching for the way out of the forest; he had lost his way in the forest. In fact he was so large that two or three steps would have taken him out, yet he could not see; everywhere he looked was forest. He kept searching for the way out and was extremely hungry. The lay devotee thought: this ghost is a monastic and especially radiant—his mind is very bright; this is a beautiful ghost—so why did he become a ghost? Upon examining, he knew that he had been a very good monk who practised and wandered in the forest for a long time, then lost his way. While lost he was very hungry. Once hungry, the mind suffered greatly and kept searching for the way out of the forest, wanting to find villagers. At that moment, dying with greed, he was immediately reborn as a ghost. But because he kept the precepts very well, he is a very beautiful ghost. When this kamma fruited, it was very refined.”
The commentary to DN 21 says that stinginess regarding dwellings, families, and benefits can also bring rebirth as a hungry ghost.
The kamma of jealousy can also (see the story of the five-son-devouring petī pañcaputtakhādapetivatthu).
**【The Animal Realm and the Hell Realm】**
A person who clings to wrong view at the time of death, the Buddha said, has only two destinations: hell or the animal realm (AN 2.28, 4.212, 5.118, 6.81; DN 12; MN 57; SN 42.2–3, 42.8). According to the Abhidhamma, all consciousnesses accompanied by wrong view are necessarily greed-rooted—that is, greed is certainly present.
The Buddha also said that if a person’s mind is bound by the enjoyment of forms, sounds, smells, tastes, or tactile objects, then when he die at that moment, he will fall into hell or the animal realm at death (SN 35.235). In short, it is the mind sticking to the five sense objects.
Venerable Mangala told this story: “I had a fellow practitioner who looked into past lives and saw that in one life he fell into hell. What was the cause of falling into hell? Looking back to that previous life, at the moment of death—whether he wanted to or not—he thought of his wife. About to die, yet still thinking of that matter, still desiring sexual intercourse, and with extremely strong desire—not ordinary desire, but very intense. It was his wife, not sexual misconduct; within the five precepts it was all right. Yet carrying such strong desire, he fell into hell. Afterwards he became an animal, and later returned.”
The Buddha taught that if a person performs twisted kamma—with body “crawling,” speech “crawling,” and mind “crawling,” performing the ten unwholesome courses of action—then when that kamma matures it leads to rebirth in hell or the animal realm. If as an animal, it will be a crawling creature that crawls away upon seeing humans. The Buddha also mentioned the possibility of becoming an owl or other animals (AN 10.216).
Why? The ten unwholesome actions (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, etc.) are never done “uprightly and openly.” When people perform these actions, the mind often has hesitation, concealment, hiding, unease, and regret—like animals that crawl away, curl up, or wriggle upon seeing humans.
In contrast, wholesome kamma is “upright” (ujuka)—open, bright, and undistorted. Therefore, when these upright and straightforward wholesome kammas mature, the Buddha said, a person is reborn as a deity or in a high family—wealthy royal, brahmin, or householder families (AN 10.216). Upright kamma brings upright results.
The Buddha often spoke of hell and the animal realm together. So how does one distinguish whether a particular kamma leads to the animal realm or to hell?
Although every unwholesome consciousness is accompanied by the mental factor of delusion (delusion being the state of the mind being lost, unclear, as if covered, and ignorant), if the delusion in a particular kamma is heavier, it leads to rebirth in the animal realm.
If the kamma is one in which the defilements are very thick and make the mind feel especially heavy, it leads to rebirth in hell. Why? Hell is the lowest and most painful realm.
Dying with aversion that makes the mind very painful can also lead to rebirth in hell. Luang Por Pramote taught: “Those who die with aversion have a mind that is not nourished or pleasant; there is only suffering. If they die at that time, because the force of aversion is controlling the mind, they are reborn as hell beings. Hell beings can still be aware; sometimes they can realise—because the suffering is so great—‘Oh, I really should not have done that, I really should not have done that,’ and they still feel regret. They still know right from wrong, therefore they still transcend animals.”
Yet some aversion can also lead to rebirth in the animal realm.
For example, at Pa-Auk Forest Monastery a meditator observed his past lives and discovered that in one life he was a goat. When the owner cut its neck, it thought: “If I were strong and powerful, I would not be cut; I could fight back.” At that time it hated the owner and died with aversion. After death it was immediately reborn as a water buffalo.
The same principle applies: when aversion arises, if delusion is heavier, one is reborn as an animal; if the force of the defilements makes the mind extremely heavy, one is reborn in hell.
And if, at the moment of death, the mind is filled only with delusion, one will be reborn in the animal realm.
**【The Asura Realm】**
Regarding asuras, Luang Por Pramote taught: “Perhaps none of us has ever seen beings of the asura realm. The asura realm is different from ghosts. Ghosts can be very handsome or very beautiful; but beings of the asura realm look very frightening and repulsive.”
“We have many views and cling very strongly to our own views—‘Only I am right; everyone else is wrong’—then we belong to the ‘existence’ of the asura realm. People who say ‘I’m the greatest’ are in fact mostly hesitant and indecisive; that is why they are called asuras: they are not very brave, yet they appear powerful in order to cover up their own fear.”
“Beings of the asura realm are not imprisoned; they can still walk about freely.”
“Those who look very frightening belong to the asura realm. These people have very strong self-conceit and do not know right from wrong; they only know ‘I’m the greatest,’ and no one can help them.”
“As for becoming a ghost or an asura, that is brought about by greed. For example, ghosts cling especially tightly to their descendants and worry about them. Asuras belong to the type with strong self-conceit, not knowing right from wrong, with particularly heavy conceit and particularly heavy wrong views—thinking, for instance, that chickens are human food and that killing them is not unwholesome kamma—this is wrong view, and they become asuras.”
Thus we know that dying with a mind of conceit, or a mind that clings to one’s own views and is obstinate, can lead to rebirth as an asura.
But it is impossible to be reborn as an asura while holding wrong view at the moment of death. Because, as mentioned above, the Buddha said that those with wrong view are reborn only in hell or the animal realm (AN 2.28, 4.212, 5.118, 6.81; DN 12; MN 57; SN 42.2–3, 42.8).
Conceit arises only in the following four greed-rooted consciousnesses:
1. Joy-accompanied, dissociated from wrong view, unprompted (somanassa-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigata-vippayuttaṃ asaṅkhārikaṃ)
2. Joy-accompanied, dissociated from wrong view, prompted (somanassa-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigata-vippayuttaṃ sasaṅkhārikaṃ)
3. Equanimity-accompanied, dissociated from wrong view, unprompted (upekkhā-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigata-vippayuttaṃ asaṅkhārikaṃ)
4. Equanimity-accompanied, dissociated from wrong view, prompted (upekkhā-sahagataṃ diṭṭhigata-vippayuttaṃ sasaṅkhārikaṃ)
**【Closing the Door to the Lower Realms】**
But no one need worry about the lower realms. As long as one **firmly believes** or **accepts after a certain degree of wise reflection** the following truths, one has already permanently closed the door to the lower realms in this very moment. The Buddha guarantees that we will certainly attain stream-entry before death. This means that thereafter we will only be reborn as humans or deities, and will certainly eventually realise Nibbāna:
The body is impermanent: the body is constantly changing; it ages, falls ill, and dies.
The mind is impermanent: the mind—this element of awareness, this stream of knowing—is constantly changing and flowing, continuously perceiving different objects such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, thoughts, and emotions. The state when awake and when asleep is already different (SN 25.1).
**【Conclusion】**
It is hoped that this article can help everyone better understand the law of kamma and rebirth.
Looking around the whole world, the editor has not yet seen anyone analyse this topic in such detail as the editor has done.
But if a comparison is to be made, the editor’s wisdom compared with that of Venerable Sāriputta is like a speck of dust compared with the Himalayas.
Sāriputta once made a lion’s roar before the Buddha: “Venerable Sir, even if it were to rain for the length of a world-cycle, I could calculate how many drops of rain fall into the ocean, how many fall on the earth, and how many fall on the mountains, and record them all.” (DhpA 181). Sāriputta’s wisdom was refined and sharp to such a degree!
And our wisdom compared with that of the Buddha is like a speck of dust compared with the entire universe.
Why? The *Paṭisambhidāmagga* says that the Buddha possesses the knowledge of all-knowing (sabbaññutā-ñāṇa). Whatever the Buddha wishes to know, he knows immediately upon reflecting.
We sincerely pay homage to Venerable Sāriputta and to the Buddha 🫡🙇♂️

Once we become satisfied with being lost in delusion, we will greatly enjoy it and become intoxicated by it, feeling very happy and pleasurable. But that extremely dangerous, wandering mind is truly very dangerous. It belongs to the accumulation of delusion. If we die with a deluded mind, because of this we will be reborn as an animal.
Within the four woeful realms, there are hell beings, asuras, hungry ghosts, and animals. Most ordinary people think that being an animal is the best and that hell beings are the worst — this is what most people believe.
But if we look at the causes that lead them to be reborn in each realm, we will understand. Animals are born because they carry delusion with them; when they die, they die while lost in delusion, and thus are reborn as animals. Among the defilements, delusion has the greatest side effects — it is the hardest to abandon and the hardest to see. Therefore, once reborn as an animal, beings will repeatedly be reborn in that state for a very long time.
There was a great monk — I’m not sure if I remember correctly — who long ago read the biography of Venerable Ajahn Mun. He said that he had been reborn as a hunting dog 500 times, because when he was a hunting dog he felt very satisfied and content. All beings tend to cling to their states. When we are born as humans, we want to be reborn as humans again. Those reborn as animals also want to continue as animals. It takes a very, very long time for change to occur. He said he had been a hunting dog for five hundred lifetimes.
Being reborn as an animal has the strongest side effects because one dies carrying delusion — not knowing right from wrong. For example, when a puppy grows up, it might even take its own mother as a mate, because it knows nothing.
This is one of the woeful realms. For example, those who die carrying anger are reborn as hell beings. When dying with anger, the mind is not refreshed or happy; there is only suffering. If one dies at that moment, it is because the power of anger is controlling the mind, and thus one is reborn as a hell being.
Hell beings can still have some awareness. Sometimes they realize — because the suffering is so intense — and they think, “Oh no, I really shouldn’t have done that,” and they feel regret. They can still recognize right and wrong, and therefore they are still somewhat better than animals.
Some people make a vow to be reborn as a Westerner’s dog after death. That is very difficult and not good at all. It is extremely hard to elevate one’s mind in that state. Luang Por has only ever seen one dog that could elevate its mind. When Luang Por was studying at Chulalongkorn University, he picked up a stray dog.
Luang Por raised it, and it had a very kind heart. When other animals came to the house, it would not bite them. When cats came, it also wouldn’t bite them, and it would even share its food with them.
I had two or three dogs. When feeding them, this dog would let the others eat first and eat only afterward. It understood generosity. It also observed several precepts: it did not bite other beings, did not harm other animals, and did not steal. When food was placed there, it would salivate and want to eat, but it would not eat until it was given permission. Only after being told to eat would it eat.
These animals had previously trained themselves very well. But they made a mistake at the time of death — they died while under the control of delusion — and thus were reborn as animals. However, relying on the good habits and old merits and virtues they had cultivated before, they died with mindfulness, and their minds were very peaceful. In this way, after death, they could transition out of the dog state, because kamma leads us to be reborn here and there.
But for most animals, it is very difficult because delusion is very strong. When great monks want to help temple animals that are about to die, they make dedications of merit for them, so that the animals’ minds will not become depressed or sad.
For example, if we have a dog that is sick and about to die, and we take it to the hospital, it will miss home very much. If it dies in front of strangers, the dog will have no happiness; its mind will be sad and depressed at death, which is not good. So there are skillful means: we put our clothes, which carry our scent, next to it so it can smell them and feel happy. Then when it dies, it can die with happiness and be reborn as a ghost.
Why are they reborn as ghosts? Because of greed in the mind. Because there is still clinging and grasping. Once reborn as a ghost, there is an opportunity to help them. Animals cannot be taught. Hell beings cannot be taught. Asuras have very strong conceit and won’t listen to anyone — they cannot be taught either. Only ghosts — some types of ghosts — can be elevated.
For example, dogs that have a very good relationship with humans, especially good dogs that are not troublesome. When they die while feeling close to humans, they are often reborn as ghosts. Then we pay homage to the Buddha, chant every day, and continuously dedicate merits to them every day. Their time as a ghost will not be long; they will soon die and be reborn in a good realm. The cycle of rebirth is truly miraculous.
In this way, they can be reborn as a good human being, or even as a good monastic teacher.

On August 19, 2025 (Fox & Friends interview), while discussing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump stated he wanted to broker peace to save lives (claiming ~7,000 people per week) and explicitly tied it to the afterlife:“I want to try and get to heaven, if possible. I’m hearing I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”
In Buddhist perspective, there is no 100% guarantee that one must be reborn to heaven; except for Non-Returners who have attained the third stage of enlightenment; after death, they will be reborn to the pure abode.
But if someone want who is compassionate towards Mr. Donald Trump and wants to help him accomplish his wish, it is really simple too.
Tell Donald Trump the truth below:
The body is constantly changing — it will age, get sick, and die.
Feelings are constantly changing — sometimes happy, sometimes unhappy, sometimes neutral.
Perception is constantly changing — we are continuously receiving new information.
Thoughts are constantly changing.
Consciousness is constantly changing — the state when awake is already different from the state of deep sleep.
If Mr. Donald Trump could believe or accept it after sufficient contemplation ; he will bound to attain stream-entry before death; which means he will shut off the door to lower realms forever.
He will only be reborn into two destinations: human realm, heavens (Ref. SN25.10)
But if he specifically wants to be reborn to heaven , it is very simple.
Buddha says the highest divine path is one without affliction, if anyone does not afflict any being, whether moving or unmoving. Surely, he or she is living endowed with the qualities of the divine path. (SN55.35)
As simple as this!
(參考 SN25.10)
Someone asked Luang Pho: If we chant (recite suttas/mantras) just a little bit each day, what merits or benefits (ānisong) will there be?
Wait a minute! When chanting, it becomes upacāra samādhi (access stillness, the preliminary stage approaching full absorption). Chanting produces upacāra samādhi, and this is exactly the level where beings in the Yāma heaven (the third of the six sense-sphere heavens) reside.
One: Loving to chant/recite regularly as a habit; Two: Developing stillness at the level of upacāra samādhi—these two qualities allow one to be born in Yāma heaven. The six heavens aren't places anyone can go to arbitrarily; they have strict rules and criteria.
Like police must stay at the police station, not at the temple; monks stay at the temple, not at the police station (laughter). Similarly, there are rules for entry—it's no small matter.
The key point: One day, the mind becomes free from defilements for just one mind-moment—like a single drop of clear, clean water. One drop per day; in a hundred days, a hundred drops. Before long, the bottle is full.
The Buddha used the term "ṭhokam ṭhokam" (drop by drop), like rain falling drip by drip, eventually filling the vessel. The goodness of making the mind momentarily free from defilements, little by little each day—soon the mind becomes full of perfections (pāramī). When perfections are full, the dirty stuff falls away bit by bit; cleanliness comes in, dirt drops a little; again and again, dirt drops more. Over time, the dirt can't stay. Doing it this way, the mind feels comfortable and at ease.

Luang Pho Phra Rajabrahmayana (Luang Pho Ruesi Ling Dam), Wat Thasung
Who does not wish to avoid falling into the lower realms?
Who fears losing control of their mind at the moment of death, giving rise to unwholesome thoughts and thus falling into the lower realms?
Do not fear!
There is a method that can liberate everyone from the lower realms.
What is it? It is cultivating unshakeable faith in the Triple Gem.
But what constitutes unshakeable faith in the Triple Gem?
First, we must have unshakeable faith in the Dhamma.
What is the Dhamma? The Four Noble Truths.
We must understand that all forms of suffering arise from craving within the mind.
When craving ceases, suffering ceases.
The path leading to the cessation of suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path—simply put, it is precepts, stillness, and wisdom.
Whenever suffering arises in our minds, we should not run around worshipping other gods or seeking someone to complain. Instead, we should diligently and mindfully practice precepts, stillness, and wisdom to extinguish the craving within our minds.
Once we achieve this, we will have unshakeable faith in the Dhamma.
And who teaches the Dhamma? It is the Buddha.
And who are we? We are the Sangha.
In this way, we will have unshakeable faith in the Triple Gem.
The Buddha said that such people will never fall into the lower realms in the future (AN3.76).
However, these people are merely stream-enterers in the path (sotāpatti-magga) and not yet stream-enterers in the fruit (sotāpanna-phala). They are only guaranteed not to fall into the lower realms in the future, but they are not guaranteed to attain Nibbāna.
If we wish to become stream-enterers (sotāpanna), we must also uphold the pure Five Precepts.
Let us now resolve to uphold the pure Five Precepts from now until death.
Can we do this?
If we can, we will become stream-enterers.
The Buddha said that such people can declare of themselves: "I am one who has ended the hell realm, ended the animal realm, ended the realm of hungry ghosts, ended the realm of suffering, the lower realms, and the woeful destinations. I am a stream-enterer (sotāpanno), one who will not fall into the lower realms, one assured of awakening, one bound for enlightenment." (AN5.179)
Have you already liberated yourself from the lower realms?
Alas! The poor little bird is truly pitiful.
So, we shouldn’t think that being reborn in the animal realm as a pet is a good thing.
They can still suffer from illness and pain.
It is said that once, this little bird developed an eye sore, which caused it to lose its appetite and be unable to eat.
Fortunately, it was a pet bird, so it could receive treatment.
If it were a wild bird, it might have lived its entire life in suffering.
Therefore, attaining nibanna and ending the cycle of rebirth is the best path.
To escape the woeful planes of existence is actually very simple:
quickly make the mind light.
If a person's mind is, on average, very heavy, then the likelihood of falling into a woeful plane in the next life is very high.
If a person's mind is, on average, very light, then the likelihood of being reborn in a heavenly realm in the next life is very high.
Let's sense the great teachers—their minds are weightless.
Why is that? They have severed all attachments.
The more we cling, the heavier our mind becomes.
The less we cling, the lighter our mind becomes.
With no clinging at all—that is nibanna, the permanent cessation of suffering.
How do we sever attachment?
Based on a foundation of good precepts,
cultivate stillness.
When stillness is stable, contemplate the impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self nature of the things we cling to.
Contemplate the impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self nature of this body.
Also contemplate the impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self nature of this mind.
It is very simple and direct.
In this way, the mind can ascend from the human level to the heavenly level,
and then from the heavenly level to the level of nibanna.
If no matter what happens in the world, nothing can disturb our happiness,
that is the success of our practice.
The Dhamma is ease and freedom from afflictions.
To use an analogy, sensual pleasures are like water guns - the pleasure shoots out in a brief burst and then it's gone.
The bliss of jhāna (meditative absorption) is more like a continuously running faucet - a steady stream of joy, but if we accidentally shut the valve, it stops.
The happiness of nibanna is like a mighty waterfall - inexhaustible and unstoppable. The great masters describe it as the supreme and eternal bliss.
That's why being a sensual realm deity isn't ideal.
Being a Brahma god is better.
But the best option? Not becoming anything at all - attaining nibanna in this very life...

Have any of us ever aspired to become the U.S. President?
To be honest, it’s not a good idea.
While we would gain the world’s greatest influence and highest fame, it wouldn’t be wise.
The average moral standard of an era is directly proportional to people's lifespan.
The longest human lifespan in history was 84,000 years—where "84,000" essentially meant "limitless" in ancient times.
But now, the average lifespan is just over 70 years, so we can imagine the current moral state...
If we become a head of state and someone attacks us, we’ll be forced to retaliate.
To secure our nation’s position, we may sometimes have to harm others.
Even when we claim to uphold peace, we may have to wage war, destroying others’ costly infrastructure and people.
All of these create tremendous bad karma, because the victims are not just one person, but countless beings.
For example, when Obama was in office, Osama bin Laden was labeled one of the top terrorists.
Obama (as pictured) authorized U.S. forces to kill bin Laden,
resulting in the deaths of bin Laden and his son.
Whether someone is a terrorist or an utterly evil criminal,
they are still a human being.
In the Pūjā Vibhaṅga Sutta, the Buddha said that even if one makes an offering with a pure mind to an unvirtuous ordinary person, the merit is a thousandfold.
Oh~ So we can deduce that killing a great evildoer still generates heavy bad karma.
But if we were the U.S. President at the time, under public pressure, we’d have no choice but to act—unless we immediately resigned.
The greater our influence, the greater the good or bad karma we can create.
Serving as U.S. President for a few years and then falling into hell is a very real possibility.
Thus, the wisest choice is to realize nibanna—not only permanently experiencing the highest bliss but also escaping danger forever.
If we’re not yet ready for nibanna but still want to be a leader, aim to become a Wheel-Turning Monarch (Cakkavatti).
A Wheel-Turning Monarch never harms themselves or others, only benefiting all.
As a result, they are usually reborn as a deva or Brahmā god after death...

<The Four Lower Realms Depend on the Motivation Behind Breaking Precepts>
Consciousness reborn in the desire realm—that is, beings in the human and heavenly realms—live in places where happiness outweighs suffering. On the other hand, realms where suffering outweighs happiness are called the "lower realms," which include the animal realm, the realm of hungry ghosts, the asura realm, and the hell realms. Beings in these realms are often plagued by restlessness and distress, with suffering far surpassing peace. The root cause of this turmoil and suffering is the failure to uphold the Five Precepts. If one frequently breaks these precepts, they will eventually fall into the four lower realms. The specific realm one is reborn into depends on the underlying reason for breaking the precepts.
The scriptures teach that if one breaks the precepts out of ignorance—meaning they do not realize that breaking the precepts is unwholesome and creates bad karma—such as being forced by circumstances to hunt, fish, or work as a hunter or fisherman to survive, they are not intentionally doing evil but are compelled by necessity. Unaware that such actions will lead to rebirth as an animal after death, their ignorance becomes the cause for rebirth in the animal realm.
Rebirth as a hungry ghost, however, stems from breaking precepts due to greed, not necessity. Such individuals live comfortably, with no lack of food or clothing, and would not starve even if they kept the precepts. Yet, driven by insatiable greed, they seek ever more wealth—engaging in corruption, fraud, deceit, theft, and so on. After death, they are reborn as hungry ghosts. No matter how many billions they acquire, they are never satisfied. Hungry ghosts have mouths as small as needle eyes but stomachs as vast as oceans—no matter how much they eat, they can never be full. This is the direct result of greed, which knows no bounds and is perpetually dissatisfied, always craving more.
However, if one harbors greed but does not break the precepts, they can still be reborn as a human. For example, some people may crave wealth, working diligently in business and striving to earn money, accumulating more and more wealth. But if they do not resort to illegal means or break the precepts, they will not fall into the hungry ghost realm and can still be reborn as humans in their next life. Whether they become wealthier than in this life, however, depends on whether they practice generosity and perform acts of giving. If they never give, even if reborn as humans, they will be poorer than in this life. But if they consistently cultivate merit, practice generosity (dāna pāramī), and accumulate virtuous deeds, they may be reborn even wealthier. Just as the Buddha, over countless lifetimes, cultivated the perfection of generosity, accumulating merit life after life, enabling him to be reborn as a prince or a wealthy man in each existence, reaping the rewards of his practice.
As for those who break precepts out of fear, they will be reborn as asuras. Their minds are constantly filled with anxiety, worry, and dread—fearing poverty, suffering, and hardship. Even if their current lives are stable, they may steal or exploit others out of "preparing for a rainy day." Their excessive anxiety about future difficulties leads them to break precepts, even though the challenges they fear are not insurmountable. In truth, everyone inevitably faces hardships in life, such as aging, sickness, and death. We should not let these sufferings become excuses for breaking precepts.
We can uphold the precepts. As the Buddha taught: "To preserve the body, one may relinquish wealth; to preserve life, one may relinquish limbs; but to uphold the Dhamma, one may relinquish even life." Here, the "Dhamma" refers precisely to precepts and virtue.

One former lord sakka (Lord of the Devas) once declared that our desire realm is essentially the realm of hungry ghosts (Ja.541).
And indeed, whether in the heavenly realms of desire or the human world, this truth remains the same.
Why? In the desire realm, nearly all beings rely on **sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches** to derive pleasure—constantly craving them, yet rarely finding true satisfaction. At our core, we are hungry ghosts.
That’s why this Sakka praised the Brahma realms instead.
Why? Because Brahma gods abide continuously in the fullness of meditative bliss, free from the desperate hunger for sensory pleasures—no longer starving for sights, sounds, smells, tastes, or touches!
(Ref. JaA.541)
It is not uncommon for non-Buddhist religious practitioners to be reborn as human presidents or emperors after death.
A former Sakka (King of the Devas) once explained that if someone practices brahmacariya (celibacy),
The lower level practitioner may be reborn as a king or powerful ruler.
The middle level practitioner may be reborn as a deva (heavenly being).
The higher level practitioner may be reborn as a Brahma god.
The commentary (Aṭṭhakathā) clarifies that this actually refers to non-Buddhist ascetics.
If they can abstain from sexual desire, they already qualify to be reborn as national leaders.
If they attain upacāra-samādhi (access stillness), they can be reborn in heavenly realms.
If they achieve jhāna (meditative absorption), they can be reborn as Brahma gods.
Thus, being a human president is not particularly impressive—it’s just the lowest level of merit from practicing celibacy. But if anyone admires them and wishes to become like them, abstaining from sexual desire is one of the requirements.
As for Buddhist monastics, if they maintain celibacy and are reborn in heavenly realms, the commentaries consider this a lower-grade achievement.
Middle-grade is rebirth in Brahma realms.
Higher-grade is attaining Nibbāna. (Ref. JaA.541)

"Different Attitudes in Giving"
What kind of mindset do you bring to generosity?
The Buddha taught that the intention behind giving directly influences its karmic fruit.
Some give with greed, seeking rewards. For example, they think beforehand: "I’m giving this so I can enjoy the fruits in the afterlife." While this still generates merit, it is the smallest. When this karma ripens at death, they are reborn in the lowest heaven of the sense realm—the Cātummahārājika (Realm of the Four Great Kings).
Some give simply because "giving is good." They act out of respect for the teachings of the wise. With this intention, their generosity ripens into rebirth in the Tāvatiṃsa Heaven, the second level of the sense realm.
Some give because their parents or ancestors always did so. Feeling ashamed to neglect tradition and fearing criticism, they follow it. Shame and fear for unwholesomeness (hiri-ottappa) is a higher motivation than mere respect! Luang Por Pramote once said about precepts: "We refrain from breaking them because the Buddha taught it’s wrong. But deities go further—they abstain out of innate moral shame and fear (hiri-ottappa), the ‘divine law.’" Thus, giving out of shame for neglecting generosity yields greater merit. This leads to rebirth in the Yāma Heaven, the third sense-realm heaven.
Some cook or possess something and notice others lack it. They think: "I have, they don’t—it wouldn’t be right to withhold it." This reflects a broader, socially responsible mindset. According to Luang Por Lersi Lingdam, only those with perfect virtues—Bodhisattvas, the parents of Bodhisattvas, or noble ones (ariyas) at least at the first stage of enlightenment—qualify for this rebirth. Thus, only great-hearted, compassionate beings ascend here. When such karma ripens, they are reborn in the Tusita Heaven, the fourth sense-realm heaven.
Some give to emulate ancient sages. The commentaries explain they give to those worthy of support. This is an even loftier mindset—a cosmic justice: "You are virtuous; I should honor your goodness." Compared to aiding wrongdoers, they choose the virtuous. This leads to rebirth in the Nimmānarati Heaven, the fifth sense-realm heaven.
Ever heard "Helping others is the root of happiness"? This is higher still—a selfless joy. When giving, the mind becomes bright, pure, and joyful. Such karma ripens into rebirth in the Paranimmita-vasavatti Heaven, the highest sense realm.
What’s the highest intention? Giving merely as an ornament of the heart—to beautify the mind. How? By eroding selfishness. We give to help others while purifying the heart. Through steadily abandoning defilements, the mind grows serene and cool, easily attaining jhāna (meditative absorption) or even enlightenment. If a noble one enters jhāna at death, they are reborn in the Brahmā realms, abiding there in uninterrupted bliss, free from the filth of the sense realm. There, they may attain arahantship, ending all suffering and rebirth.

If someone possesses the four unbreakable purities:
Unwavering faith in the Buddha.
Unwavering faith in the Four Noble Truths.
Unwavering faith in the existence of the Noble Sangha
Unwavering commitment to the Five Precepts and the Ten Wholesome Deeds.
The Five Precepts:
Not to kill.
Not to steal.
Not to engage in sexual misconduct.
Not to lie.
Not to consume intoxicants.
The Ten Wholesome Deeds:
Not to kill.
Not to steal.
Not to engage in sexual misconduct.
Not to lie.
Not to create discord.
Not to use harsh language.
Not to speak meaningless words.
Not to covet what belongs to others.
Not to harbor hatred, jealousy, or intentions to harm others.
To believe in kamma, past and future lives, and to acknowledge the kindness of parents.
Then, he will be able to ascend directly to heaven (SN 55.18).
Ajahn Brahm
If we have a next life, we should not be afraid to enter the Fourth Jhana Brahma heaven.
We might think that entering the Fourth Jhana brings no joy, only a bland experience.
But that’s not true.
Ajahn Brahm says he wouldn’t describe this experience as "neutral"; it is a very content feeling.
It is a state more fulfilling than the First, Second, and Third Jhanas.
The Buddha said that in the Brahma heaven of the Fourth Jhana, the Devas live for five hundred cosmic cycles. (AN4.123)
In this interim, after Maitreya Bodhisattva attains Buddhahood, we can ask him about the Dharma.
We can also inquire about the Dharma from other Buddhas after their enlightenment.
Between the times of one Buddha and another, we can seek guidance from solitary buddhas and Arahants.
Therefore, if we have not yet realized nibanna in this life, we should not fear being reborn in the Fourth Jhana brahma heaven

"Wherever You Think of at the Moment of Death, That’s Where You Will Go"
Buddhism teaches us to take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. When our mind falls into negativity, the merits of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha will help us, preventing us from descending into the lower realms. Without this, our minds can easily fall into those realms.
For example, if we think of our children, we may become a ghost, constantly watching over them. Whatever we think of, we will be reborn as that. Our minds can become trapped in that state and will be reborn there.
If we remember the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, we can be reborn in the human realm or the heavenly realm. If we practice well, we can further elevate ourselves to the first stage of enlightenment (stream entry). With even greater effort, we can be once-returner, non-returner, and so on.
--- Luang Ta Siri
An object is placed in water,
if its density is higher than that of water, it will sink.
If its density is lower than that of water, it will rise.
Similarly, when the mind is still in the samsara.
If the "density" of the mind is high, it will sink.
If the "density" of the mind is low, it will rise.
Everyone can experience this for themselves.
The density of the mind is equal to the degree of our attachment to the world.
The more we cling to the world, the heavier the mind becomes; it tends to lean towards the lower realms. When it becomes so heavy that it cannot be any heavier, it is like falling into hell.
The more we let go of the world, the lighter the mind becomes; it tends to lean towards the heavenly realms and the Brahma realms. If all attachments are severed, the mind will become so light that it floats out of the world, out of the cycle of rebirth.
We do not have to wait until after death to know .
We can examine the density of our minds right now.
"Do Not Aspire to Be an Animal"
Many people wish to be pets or animals. In fact, this is not a very wise decision.
For example, wishing to become a dog, cat, or giant panda. If it's in the wild, then good luck to you.
In the wild, there are many predators chasing us to eat, and we live in constant fear. Even if no one tries to eat us, there will be natural enemies causing us trouble.
If we're bullied or treated unfairly, in nature, there's no police—only the survival of the fittest. You have no one to complain to. Do you like that? (laughs)
Just when we establish our habitat, nature comes along to destroy it. Sometimes with changing seasons, we are forced to move. An animal's habitat is not as stable and secure as that of humans.
Wild animals worry daily about food and are constantly running for food. Being a wild animal is not easy.
Even being a pet is not ideal. Take the giant panda, for example—having someone to take care of all its needs is good?
You need to put yourself in their shoes and imagine their lives.
They have very little choice in what they eat; they must eat whatever is provided.
If your owner has a low mood , he may castrate you (laugh)
How would you feel if every move you made was monitored by cameras? That’s how it is for giant pandas— even their mating is observed. If they throw tantrum, it gets posted online, and any embarrassing moments are shared publicly. There’s really no privacy.
Once you become a pet, you lose your freedom. Would you like to be confined to the same space for one year or ten years? If you become a pet, you have no choice in the matter. You could ask the birds in cages how they feel...
Moreover, animals generally have shorter lifespans. The giant panda An An previusly living in HK Ocean Park lived to only 36 years old.
Pet dogs live about 14.1 years.
Pet cats live about 14.4 years.
After having babies, they must part ways in a few years.
We will have to say goodbye to partners after a few years.
Do you like that?
Being born as an animal usually increases the chance of falling into the woeful realms. As Luang Por Pramote said, the mind of an animal is commonly lost and confused.
A lost mind does not know good from evil, nor does it understand self-interest or those of others; it tends to fall into decline. The Buddha said that the number of animals reborn in the lower realms after death, compared to those reborn in the higher realms, is like the dust on a fingertip compared to the dust of the earth.
In the animal realm, there is almost no opportunity for generosity, observing precepts, or meditation; it is impossible to experience the bliss of jhana or attain the ultimate happiness—Nirvana. The mind is only filled with confusion and turmoil.
Thus, being an animal is not an enjoyable experience.

Hell, Animal Realm, Hungry Ghosts, Asura, Human, Deities, Brahma, Nibbana
These realms can be experienced by everyone.
In fact, they are related to our level of happiness. For example, if greed, hatred, and delusion are overwhelming, this leads to extreme unhappiness, immense suffering, and chaos—at this moment, the mind is in hell. If one dies at this time, they will fall into hell.
If our greed, hatred, and delusion are significant, we experience unhappiness, suffering, and chaos; at this time, we are in the realms of animals, hungry ghosts, or asuras. If one dies at this moment , they will fall into the evil paths.
If our mind is ordinary, without suffering, chaos, or distress; as Luang Por Pramote said, this is the human mind.
If we are happy and free from defilements, then our mind is in the heavenly realms.
If we are extremely happy, deeply satisfied, and continuously filled with the happiness of stillness; at this moment , the mind is in the Brahma realm.
If we are overwhelmingly joyful and content , this is Nibbana. All Buddhas, Paccekabuddhas, and Arahants are permanently happy beyond measure.
Sometimes we see that some of the great elders from the time of the Buddha, who offered to arahants, the Buddha, or the monastic community, remain free from the lower realms for tens, hundreds, or even thousands of kalpas, only being reborn as humans or deities, ultimately reaching Nibbana.
Sometimes, our offerings to the monks can have such effects, and sometimes they cannot.
Here’s a shared story of reincarnation from a woman who observed the Ten Precepts at the Pa-Auk Forest Monastery. She recalled her 30 past lives. In her 26th past life, she continuously did good deeds and offered robes, etc.
Hmm, by offering to monks and the monastic community, she should have been thriving in the cycle of rebirth, right!
However, the reality was quite different. In her next life, she was reborn as a man who liked to give.
In the life after that, she was reborn as a man engaged in the business of selling and killing poultry.
Then things turned for the worse! In her next life, she fell into hell. After that, she spent six lifetimes as an animal before becoming human again.
After being human, she enjoyed fishing and killing fish, leading her to fall back into hell for two consecutive lifetimes.
After that, she spent five lifetimes as an animal, seven lifetimes as a human, and one lifetime as a hungry ghost, before arriving in this life.
So we can see that whether one can prosper and be happy over many lifetimes, remaining in the human and heavenly realms, depends solely on the amount of good and evil in each life.
What is the frequency of good intentions arising? What is the frequency of unwholesome intentions arising?
Even if we offered robes to the monastic community in a past life, if in this life most of our time is filled with greed, hatred, and delusion, we will likely still fall into the realms of animals, hungry ghosts, or hell in the next life.
Even if we have offered to arahants or even to the living Buddha, what of it? Queen. Jasmine from the Buddha's time participated in the incomparable offering; yet when she faced death, she arose with defilements and fell into hell.
The great merit of offering to the field of merit does not directly push us into heaven. Sometimes it merely helps us slowly become a better person, with good intentions arising most of the time.
In the next life, we then have a greater chance of ascending to the heavenly realms or becoming significant individuals in the human realm. The reason for becoming a significant person is partly because the mind leans towards wholesomeness, thus having more mental strength and wisdom than the average person.
The higher the quality of the mind, the more wholesome it is; the deeper the mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom; then the greater the chance of ascending to higher heavenly realms.
But if we choose to continue harboring our negative qualities and selfishness, or even to sink further; even if we have given offerings to the Buddha, there is no guarantee that we will be reborn in a good realm in the next life.
